Ep.54 – Hidden IBS trigger ingredients

If you’ve had IBS for a while, you might be well aware of your common food triggers, maybe things like dairy, certain fruits and vegetables, or grains. But did you know some foods contain hidden ingredients that can trigger an IBS flare up? From artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, to thickening agents and preservatives, these ingredients can lead to bloating, diarrhoea and abdominal pain in some people.
Often, if you don’t even realise that they’re in there. In this episode, I’m going to explore five specific food additives that you could watch out for. I’ll discuss where these ingredients are commonly found, how they might affect your digestive system, and why they might be the hidden culprits behind your flare ups.

Ep.53 – How your childhood eating could be affecting your IBS

If you’ve ever decided to change your diet to better support your digestion, but struggle to stick to this new way of eating, then this episode is for you. There are lots of reasons why we struggle to make changes to our diet. Could be down to time, lack of clarity on your goals, or just feeling really confused about what to eat.
But the other area I’m going to cover today is our attitudes to food, and how our childhood experiences of eating can influence what we do as an adult. This week I’m going to talk about how meanings are linked to foods, and how this can play a part in how challenging we find it to follow a new diet.

Ep.52 – The possible cause of your IBS-Diarrhoea

If you’re struggling with diarrhoea predominant IBS, you might be surprised to know that around 34%, that’s almost a third of people with IBSD may have something called bile acid diarrhoea or bile acid malabsorption. And that’s what I’m going to cover in this episode of the Inside Knowledge podcast.
I’ll cover what are bile acids, how do we make them, and why would you not be reabsorbing them. I’ll also be going through treatment and testing for bile acid diarrhoea, so that you can have a good conversation with your doctor about whether this could be the cause of your IBS.

Ep.51 – How to increase your appetite with IBS

Do you need to increase your appetite? Maybe you know you need to eat more food because you are considered underweight, but you just don’t feel like eating. It could be that you just don’t get on well with eating much, and you find it hard to get excited about food. In this episode of the Inside Knowledge Podcast, You’ll learn about how appetite works and how to stimulate your desire for food.
You’ll also learn how I suggest my gut reset clients measure their appetite, and you can download the tracker that I use with them to do this. So listen up for how to get a little bit more interested in food and hopefully start enjoying eating again.

Ep.50 – How to gain weight with IBS

Why is it so hard to put on weight if you’ve got IBS? Especially when you feel like you’re really eating enough already. Unexpected or undesired weight loss can be more prevalent with people who’ve got a diarrhoea predominant type of IBS because often the transit time of food doesn’t really allow for proper digestion.
But there are also people with constipation in a low body weight who really struggle to put on any weight. In this episode of the Inside Knowledge podcast, I’ll be sharing my advice on how to increase your energy intake without worsening your digestive symptoms in either SIBO or IBS. And you’ll also learn how to increase your appetite so you actually want to eat more.

Ep.49 – Case study – Fear of hunger & restriction

Are you listening to too many different sets of voices in terms of what to do for your IBS? In this episode, I’m going to go through another case study of a previous client I worked with who was listening to so many voices in the nutrition space about what is good for gut health. But she had created a set of rules that were actually inadvertently contributing to her IBS symptoms.
She was suffering with constipation, bloating, and constant gurgling, a really noisy digestion. This episode will explain how I worked with Fran to improve her digestion and her trust in her body.

Ep.48 – Breathing for IBS

Are you breathing properly? Did you know how you breathe can actually impact on your digestion? This might all sound a bit far fetched, but actually the way we take air into our body and out of our body is a result of how we’re feeling and can actually influence how we’re feeling. IBS is a stress sensitive disorder, but knowing that doesn’t help you manage it unless you know some ways to bring your stress levels down.
In this episode of the Inside Knowledge podcast, I’ll run through some techniques for better breathing to help calm your digestion so you can reduce down your symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain and erratic bowel movements.

Ep.47 – Causes of IBS

If you’re like most of my clients, you’re probably desperate to find the real cause of your IBS. What kicked all of this trouble off? Was it something you ate? Was it something you did? In reality, there is no one cause or often we can’t find the specific cause. But in this episode of the Inside Knowledge podcast, I’m going to run through some common causes of IBS that I go through with my clients to try and identify what your specific problems might be because each root cause will give you different triggers and a different experience of IBS.
This episode will all be about how some of those root causes interlink and how you can address IBS.

Ep.46 – Protein essentials for people with IBS

When my clients first start working with me, they all complete a diet diary to explain to me what they eat, and one of the aspects I look at is their macronutrient content. Are they eating enough protein, enough carbs, and fats? Some people with IBS find protein really difficult to digest, that it just sits heavy in the Stomach and leaves them feeling really sluggish.
Other people with IBS might find protein their only safe food because there is no fibre in protein. In this episode of the Inside Knowledge Podcast, I’ll be explaining how much protein you should be eating, how to work that out, and also how to make protein digestion easier, so you can enjoy more foods.

Ep.45 – Bloating – IBS podcast

Do you undo your waistband every evening by 7pm because of significant bloating? If you do, you’re not alone. Bloating is one of the most common issues that I work with. I’ve had clients who’ve had such significant bloating they’ve had to remove their bra after lunch because the bloating was pushing in their upper abdomen.
I’ve also worked with somebody whose bloating gave them palpitations because their swollen digestive tract was increasing pressure on their heart. In this episode of the Inside Knowledge podcast, I’ll share tips on what to avoid eating, doing, and wearing to beat the bloat. I’ll also share some ideas to help if you’re in the midst of a flare up, so you can have more evenings without undoing your waistband.
