When I work with clients I normally end up recommending some supplementation alongside dietary changes. You may be wondering why you need them. Well, there are a few reasons:Do I need supplements  
  1. Most people are grossly deficient in 6 out of 8 vitamins and minerals, unfortunately most people don’t eat a well balanced diet. Most people don’t reach the ‘9 a day’ recommendation from the WHO, and many don’t eat 5 a day.
  2. Food is less nutritious than it used to be due to intensive farming techniques used today. The soil is over farmed, pesticides and chemicals commonly used in farming can add an additional strain on our body to process.
  3. Many of our core foods are heavily processed, removing most of the goodness (e.g. white bread, white rice) and moving away from the whole food.
  4. Alcohol, calorie restriction diets (e.g. low fat diets) or common medication can deplete our levels of minerals (e.g. the oral contraceptive pill)
I use supplements as a boost to your dietary changes to speed things along. If you’ve got a chronic condition chances are there could be nutrient insufficiency. I don’t recommend taking nutritional supplements without proper advice, or in place of making dietary changes, but they can help you feel better more quickly.
