3 things your doctor might say but could be unhelp 3 things your doctor might say but could be unhelpful in IBSMy clients have been told things like this, have you heard this too?⚠️You’ll have to live with this - if you hear ‘there is nothing that can be done’ and you leave feeling hopeless it can be very hard, especially when your symptoms are significantly disrupting your life. There are many causes of IBS symptoms that can be investigated with the right knowledge. We can separate out conditions like SIBO, bile acid malabsorption, pelvic floor issues, microscopic colitis which can all be treated. There are also several dietary approaches for people with IBS that can relieve symptoms.⚠️Try going gluten free - unfortunately it’s more likely to be the starch in wheat than gluten that upsets your digestion (if at all). Going gluten free by switching to GF bread, pasta and other products can reduce the fructans in your diet, which might help, but you won’t know whether it’s gluten or fructans. This can create some fear of foods, and cause people to avoid all foods containing gluten unnecessarily. Don’t cut out gluten unless you have already ruled out coeliac disease.⚠️Cut out fibre - whilst there can be a case for changing the fibre types in your diet, it’s best for nearly everyone to increase fibre intake. Fibre regulates bowel movements and keeps us healthy. Flax seeds, psyllium husk, and chia seeds can all be helpful to create a smooth stool that’s easy to pass in IBS.Dealing with IBS day in and day out I don’t find these bits of advice helpful.(I’m not anti doctor, and sorry if this comes across as so. I know they work so hard, & are pushed for time, plus IBS is a long term, chronic condition which feels frustrating for everyone involved.)There is no easy path to getting things sorted but don’t give up if your digestion is getting in the way of living your life.✨️ Send this to someone who needs to see why these things don't help.#ibs #ibsawareness #ibshelp ##ibstreatment #irritablebowelsyndrome
I said it many times, and I'm saying it again, und I said it many times, and I'm saying it again, undereating can CAUSE gut symptoms.Being scared of food is very common in IBS and SIBO. When you eat the symptoms get worse, so it feels safer to eat less and avoid more food. Sound familiar? If you’re eating less and less but still getting bloated, constipated or diarrhoea, gassy and pain then you could be undereating.#ibs #ibsnutritionist #irritablebowelsyndrome #gutreset #sibonutritionist

Vitamin D is sometimes called the sunshine vitamin Vitamin D is sometimes called the sunshine vitamin because we make it through the skin on contact with sunshine. So at the end of the summer most of us have high enough blood levels. I don’t know about you but I haven’t been outside as much as August, and it’s been raniing for 3 weeks solid!So….. Not much sunshine on my skin until today.People with IBS or SIBO may be more likely to have low levels of vitamin D, compared to healthy controls. Vitamin D deficiency was noted in 82% of the IBS patients in one study compared to 31% in the control group.➡️ Should you take Vitamin D?It’s very individual and ideally before supplementing you’d get a blood test - but from around September even if you’re outside a lot, you can’t MAKE vitamin D anymore. Stores starts to decline.🇬🇧 In the UK (and whole northern hemisphere) the sun is lower in the sky, now until spring and less likely we can access the correct level of radiation to make vitamin D in our skin.NHS suggests everyone takes 400iu a day and many people do well on 1000iu.⚠️Do not take huge doses. More isn’t better as it can be toxic at very high levels and is stored in fat cells (not pee’d out like B vits).Does it help digestion?Research in IBS is mixed. Some people with IBS who were low in Vitamin D felt better at the end of a 12 week supplementation trial. Other trials haven’t replicated this. Vitamin D can be associated with low mood and anxiety, which also overlap with IBS.BUT - vitamin D has been shown to help gut barrier integrity, and support diversity in your gut microbes.#ibs #vitamind #guthealthmatters #guthealthy #ibsdiet
Unfortunately I love… these things👞👞The Unfortunately I love… these things👞👞The shoes I had to buy when we were in France 2 years ago, and my sandals broke. The only shop was a supermarket, and these were all they had. But since then they are my trusty garden shoes to slip on and off!My guinea pig checking has doubled since two foxes have started hanging out on next doors shed roof. The foxes don’t seem to come into our garden and as we both work from home we’re in and out of the kitchen, but I do like to check in throughout my day when they’re outside. The raspberries are autumn ones so it’s nice to get them at the end of the summer, and to be fair the rest of the family are less bothered about them than they used to be when the kids were smaller. The yoghurts are definitely ultra processed but a quick way to add to my protein intake before a dance class or when I’m hungry in the afternoons. What do you secretly like but don't like to admit?#nutritionistUK #nutritionaltherapy #ibsnutritionist #nutritionaltherapist
Today, a client told me they ‘can’t face food Today, a client told me they ‘can’t face food in the morning’. Many of my clients think that skipping breakfast will help their bloating. But here’s what actually happens: your gut misses out on the gentle wake-up it needs, and by mid-morning you’re starving, reaching for snacks that often trigger more symptoms.Skipping breakfast can also mess with your gut motility (the way food moves through your gut). For people with IBS, this can mean more constipation, unpredictable bowel movement, or uncomfortable bloating later in the day. It's harder to meet your nutrition targets on only 2 meals. Can you really eat enough fibre, protein, iron, calcium etc etc in just lunch & dinner? 🤔🍽 A small, simple breakfast can make a big difference. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Even a small bowl of oats, a slice of toast with scrambled eggs, or some high protein yoghurt with berries can help keep your gut calm and things moving. So if you’re still skipping breakfast to ‘help your gut’ it might be time to rethink it.#ibstips #ibs #ibsnutrition #ibshelp #irritablebowelsyndrome #ibssupport #guthealth #bloating
